nordic whale design

My name is Nicolina and I always had a fascination for making garments. As a child I spent many afternoons with my grandmother. She was a crocheter with a capital C and always worked on an intricate piece of lace. I wanted to learn, and made long string and didn’t figure out which stitch to crochet in so the fabric was very uneven.

Prior to her injury and mobility loss she used to knit and one day when I came over, there was a pair of short pink knitting needles, straight size 3.5mm, perfect for a child’s hands. I made hats, lots of hats on straight needles, seaming one side, and a wardrobe for my favorite teddy. There was a break when sports took over my time and I found knitting again in my later teens. Making fun, practical yet beautiful garments for kids has always been my favorite. Many have asked about adult sizes and plan on grading up but the next design keeps pulling my attention, so we’ll see.

Growing up and living in at the west coast of Sweden, with a rich knitting tradition both from the fancy bohus knitting, fine pieces made to sell and the more practical colourwork sweaters with, similar to traditional Norwegian knitting.

Making patterns came naturally as I from the beginning learned by experimenting, I might have been offered instructions but, I’m not very good at following instructions (my craft grade in school suffered for it). I made mistakes but mistakes ripped and tried again, changing to make it better and learn. I really hope that you will find joy in the practical and playful designs, garments made for play. And always remember to adjust the pattern for your/your recipient’s body and needs. Every body is different and it feels amazing slipping on a perfectly fitting garment especially when ready to wear, bought items, don’t fit that well.
